Perineal skin correction

Information and rates

Excess skin in the perineal area can occur after childbirth, especially if episiotomies (surgical cuts) or spontaneous tears happen during the birthing process. This can happen in different ways:

  1. Episiotomy: An episiotomy is a surgical incision sometimes performed during childbirth to enlarge the vaginal opening and facilitate the birthing process. This procedure is usually done if the doctor or midwife believes that severe tearing might otherwise occur. After healing, the tissue around the perineum may sometimes feel looser than before.
  2. Spontaneous tearing: During childbirth, the perineum can tear spontaneously due to the pressure of the baby’s head passing through the birth canal. The severity of the tear can range from minor to more extensive. In some cases, excess skin may develop after healing.

Excess skin in the perineal area can also occur in women who have never given birth. This may have several causes, including:

  1. Weight loss: After significant weight loss, excess skin can develop in different parts of the body, including the perineal area.
  2. Aging: Just like other parts of the body, the skin’s elasticity in the perineal area can decrease with age. This can lead to excess skin formation.
  3. Genetic predisposition: Some women naturally have a tendency to develop excess skin, regardless of whether they have given birth. This may be due to genetic factors that influence skin elasticity and structure.

What are the symptoms?

Excess skin in the perineal area can have various effects, including aesthetic concerns that impact self-image or physical discomfort such as difficulties with sitting, walking, and/or sexual intercourse. Additionally, excess perineal skin can cause hygiene issues.

Procedure

How does the procedure work?

A treatment always begins with a free, no-obligation consultation. Below, we describe the next steps of a perineal skin correction.

Upon arrival, you check in at the reception. The doctor may have prescribed medication in advance, which you have already picked up from the pharmacy and brought with you. If prescribed, you will take the medication at the clinic and receive numbing cream with instructions. The numbing cream helps reduce the sensation of the anesthetic injections. Feel free to relax with a cup of coffee or tea, as the cream takes about 45 minutes to take effect. This is why we ask you to arrive earlier.

Next, the assistant will escort you from the waiting area to the treatment room. There, you can remove your lower clothing. The medical team will be ready for you. You will be asked to stand in front of the chair while the doctor takes a photo. Any remaining questions will be answered, and the procedure will be briefly discussed.

You will then take a seat in the chair, and the procedure will begin. You will be covered with a sterile drape and given a few small injections to locally numb the area. After the procedure, you will move to another room, where you will remain for about 30 minutes for observation. If everything is fine, you will be able to go home.

Recovery and aftercare

Recovery perineal skin correction

Following post-operative care instructions carefully is crucial for a smooth and speedy recovery. This includes avoiding intense physical activities for several weeks after the procedure.

Aftercare perineal skin correction

Driving

We strongly advise against driving yourself after the procedure. Depending on your recovery, you may be able to drive again within a few days to a week.

Aspirine, Ibuprofen and Paracetamol

In the first few days, you may take two Paracetamol (500 mg) tablets every 4-6 hours. As the pain decreases, you can reduce this to one Paracetamol (500 mg) tablet every 4-6 hours. If needed, you may also take Ibuprofen (400 mg) alongside Paracetamol. Any additional medication or pain relief should be taken only as prescribed by your doctor.

Cooling

It is advisable to cool the area for 10-15 minutes every hour during the first few days using an ice pack, which we provide you with. Always place a clean cloth or gauze between the ice pack and your skin.

Towel

We recommend sitting on a tightly rolled-up towel as much as possible for the first three days after the procedure. This acts as a compression bandage to help minimize swelling.

Resting

It is very important to take one full week of rest after the procedure. Make sure someone is available to assist you if needed.

Showering

You can shower with the stitches. We recommend rinsing the wound gently twice a day using the showerhead. Ensure the water is not too hot to prevent excessive bleeding. Avoid hot baths for 4-6 weeks, as they can increase swelling.

Exercise and physical activity

We strongly advise against exercising or engaging in any strenuous physical activity for the first 4-6 weeks after the procedure.

Sexual intercourse

We recommend avoiding sexual intercourse for at least six weeks after the procedure. Engaging in sex too soon can cause excessive friction and increase the risk of infection.

Urination

Rinse the area briefly with water after urinating to maintain hygiene.

Work

Heavy physical work should be avoided for at least the first four weeks after the procedure.

Menstruation

We advise against using tampons for the first six weeks after the procedure. Instead, use sanitary pads and rinse gently with the showerhead twice a day. You can also opt for menstrual underwear, which absorbs menstrual blood and light urinary leakage, eliminating the need for tampons or pads. Moodies Undies offers a wide range of menstrual underwear.

Follow-up appointments

Two weeks after the procedure, you will have your first follow-up appointment at the clinic, during which the stitches will be removed. After 5-6 months, you will return for your final check-up with your treating doctor, where it will be determined if any further correction is necessary.

Perineal skin correction results

Do not expect immediate results after a perineal skin correction. In the first few weeks, the treated area may feel tight or swollen, which is completely normal. After a few weeks, the swelling and bruising will subside, and you will start to see visible results. However, the final result will only be fully visible after several months.
