Areola correction

Information and rates

Sometimes the areola, the pigmented area around the nipple, may be too large or have an irregular shape. An areola correction can be performed to reduce, refine, or improve the shape of the areola.

What complaints can arise from a large areola?

Although most nipples and areolas are naturally irregular and not perfectly round, some people may wish to correct this irregularity. A large areola does not cause physical discomfort; it is mainly a cosmetic concern. Some may feel that their breasts appear less aesthetically pleasing because the size of the areola does not match the proportions of the breast.

How does a large or irregular areola develop?

During breast development in puberty, the areola can grow larger than the breast itself. The skin of the areola may stretch after a breast augmentation, or the areola may appear larger in comparison to smaller breasts after, for example, breastfeeding. Irregularities in the areola can also result from surgeries involving the breast, nipple, or areola.

A large or irregular areola is almost always a harmless condition. However, if something changes in one breast without a clear cause, we advise you to consult your general practitioner.

How much does an areola correction cost?

Consultation Free
Areola correction (both sides) € 1430

These prices are all-inclusive: consultation, follow-up check, and, if necessary, additional aftercare. A complete overview of the prices for all our treatments can be found on our price list.

Procedure

How does the procedure work?

The procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes per breast and is performed under local anesthesia. The anesthetic injections may sting briefly, but after that, you will feel little to nothing during the procedure itself.

First, a donut-shaped ring is marked on the outer edge of the areola. This area of skin is then removed. The area is sutured in layers, sometimes using dissolvable stitches.

Immediately after the procedure, small folds may appear along the edge of the areola because the outer edge of the donut is slightly larger than the inner edge. These folds will gradually smooth out over time.

Are there any risks associated with the procedure?

Yes, every procedure carries some risk. There is a possibility of bleeding, infection, tissue necrosis, or dissatisfaction with the result. However, the risk of complications at V-Klinieken is less than 1%.

Before and after

Recovery and aftercare

Recovery after an areola correction

After an areola correction, you may experience a burning or painful sensation in the nipple(s). You may also notice some wound fluid mixed with blood, especially during the first night after the procedure. Bruising and scabbing are also normal symptoms following the treatment.

Aftercare and advice following an areola correction:

  • Whenever the wounds can get wet in the shower depends on the specific treatment. The doctor will discuss this with you after the procedure. We recommend not showering for too long and avoiding very hot water.
  • Clean the area around the wound at least once and no more than twice a day with a mild, fragrance-free, pH-neutral soap or disinfectant soap (such as Sebamed) for six weeks, until the area is fully healed. This can be done in the shower.
  • Always make sure that no soap residue remains in the wounds, as this may cause irritation. Any scabs can be rinsed off gently during the shower.
  • After washing, gently pat the area around the wound dry with a clean towel or gauze.
  • Do not apply ointment, petroleum jelly, or similar products on or around the wound.
Do not apply wound disinfectants such as Sterilon or Betadine on or around the wound.
  • Wear a supportive sports bra for six weeks to help prevent stretching or widening of the scar.
You may also place a gauze pad inside the bra if needed.
  • Avoid contact with swimming water (chlorinated pools, hot tubs, or natural bodies of water) for at least four weeks during the healing process. The use of (steam) baths, saunas, and tanning beds is also strongly discouraged during the first four weeks after the procedure.
